Internet Hunting
Sec. 1. Purpose
To prohibit the operation and use of internet hunting facilities where computer users shoot at live targets by remotely operating rifles or other lethal devices linked to video cameras or other remotely operated equipment located at a confined hunting facility.
Sec. 2. Definitions
For the purposes of this section, "Internet Hunting" means the use of a computer or any other device, equipment, software, or technology, to remotely control the aiming and discharge of any weapon, including, but not limited to, any firearm, bow and arrow, spear, slingshot, harpoon, or any other projectile device.
Sec. 3. Language
(a) It is unlawful for any person to shoot, shoot at, or kill any living creature with any gun or other device accessed via an internet connection in this state. (b) It is further unlawful for any person, firm, corporation, partnership, limited liability company, association, or other business entity to do either of the following:(1) Own or operate a shooting range, site, or gallery located in the state for purposes of the online shooting or spearing of any living animal.(2) Create, maintain, or utilize an internet website, or a service or business via any other means, from any location within the state for purposes of the online shooting or spearing of any living animal for the purposes of this section. (c) It is unlawful to possess or confine any living animal in furtherance of an activity prohibited by this section. (d) It is unlawful for any person in this state to import or export from this state animal, or any part thereof, which is killed by any device accessed via an internet connection. (e) Any animal, or any part thereof, which is possessed in violation of this section, shall be subject to seizure by the Department.
Internet hunting is a relatively new phenomenon where the "hunter" pays a confined hunting facility in a remote location to "hunt" using virtual technology from their home computer. However the hunter operates a real gun and kills real animals using their computer controls. It is similar to computer hunting games, except that the ammunition is live and the animal ends up dead.
Internet hunting is an issue related to canned hunts as it usually takes place on a hunting preserve. Many states have already introduced or passed legislation banning internet hunting with hunters and animal advocates alike supporting the ban.
